Toronto Blue Jays Inside Pitch 2009-09-07

There's winning bad, winning ugly and winning weird.

The Jays definitely had one of the latter in Sunday's finale against the Yankees that squared the four-game series.

It was certainly a day and game the Yankees would like to forget as they:

--Committed four errors.

--Lost a ball in the sun that resulted in a Vernon Wells double.

--Had a play at third in the fifth inning where Jerry Hairston fielded a chopper by Joe Inglett, turned to throw to home and seeing he would be late, fired to first but too late to nail Inglett, who was credited with an RBI single.

--Had two different pitchers issue bases-loaded walks in the Jays eight-run fifth inning.

--Hit Jays 1B Randy Ruiz in the face, forcing him out of the game and a run in.

--Had left fielder Johnny Damon and center fielder Melky Cabrera collide and crash to the ground with Cabrera hanging on to the ball for the third out in the sixth.

It was that kind of a day.

"Every day you come out, you see something new," manager Cito Gaston said with a smile. "We saw some things (Sunday) that normally don't happen.

"You want to come out with a win (on such a day) and thank God we did. On the other hand, you can look at it and say, 'Hey, that was a strange game.' There was a ball hit in the infield that nobody could get to and the pitcher finally has to catch it (Brandon League in the seventh); (Marco Scutaro sliding into second and ending up scoring (after picking himself up and racing home). A weird game but we came up on the winning end of it, so I'm happy with that."

BLUE JAYS 14, YANKEES 8: The Yankees gift-wrapped the victory as they committed a season-high four errors, lost a ball in the sun, walked in two runs and hit Blue Jay Randy Ruiz in the face with a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run. 2B Aaron Hill drove in three runs on a 2-for-5 day. LHP Brian Tallet went five innings for the win, his first since June 23.
