Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-09-07

Toronto Blue Jays Notes, Quotes 2009-09-07--With the victory Friday, Roy Halladay lifted his career record against the Yankees to 17-6, which is the best record vs. New York of any current pitcher. The all-time best won-lost record against the Yankees (a minimum of 20 decisions) is a 17-5 mark held by Red Sox lefty Babe Ruth, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

--In the second inning of Sunday's game, Jays DH Randy Ruiz put a charge into a 1-0 pitch from Andy Pettitte. Ruiz pulled the ball high and deep and it settled into the second deck. He circled the bases believing he had hit his sixth homer. Not so fast. The umpires called for a replay, which showed that the ball curved outside the foul pole by inches. Ruiz was brought back to the plate where he ultimately ground out to third. Next time up, in the fourth, Ruiz drilled a 2-1 pitch into the seats in left center. There was no dispute this time on his sixth home run of the season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Right now, it's kind of tough to see how we're going to be better before the end of the season." -- Manager Cito Gaston, noting his team's poor record over the past two months and the strength of the opposition the Jays will face in September.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- The number of one-hitters in RHP Roy Halladay's career. His first came in his second major league start, Sept. 27, 1998, when he lost a no-hitter with two out in the ninth on a pinch-hit home run by the Tiger's Bobby Higginson. His second one occurred Friday in a 6-0 victory over the Yankees.
